Justin Sun the Founder of cryptocurrency Tron and CEO of Bittorrent has won a lunch with Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO, Warren Buffet after placing a winning bid of $4,567,888.00 on the auction hosted by SanFrancisco based charity GLIDE.
“This month GLIDE celebrates the 20th anniversary of the eBay Auction for Power Lunch with Warren Buffett. This exciting annual effort raises funds for GLIDE’s comprehensive programs benefitting some of the most in-need and marginalized San Franciscans.”
Sun announced the winning bid via his twitter account and shared his intentions for the now much anticipated meeting with the staunchly anti-crypto Buffett:
“I officially announce I’ve won the record-setting 20th-anniversary charity lunch hosted by @WarrenBuffett. I’ll also invite #blockchain industry leaders to meet with a titan of investment. I hope this benefits everyone.”
Soon thereafter , Sun appeared on CNBC’s Squawkbox to discuss the event, why he placed the bid, as well as who he was planning to bring along to join him to fill up the 7 guest spots that come with it.
“I want to become the bridge between the institutional investor and also financial institution and the traditional investor, like Warren Buffet. Between the crypto community and also blockchain industry. So that’s why i also want to bring seven leaders of the blockchain industry to communicate with Warren Buffet about blockchain technology and the opportunity behind it.”
Buffet has been notoriously outspoken on his beliefs, going as far as calling bitcoin ‘probably rat poison squared’. Sun was asked whether this concerned him and if he believed he would be able to change Buffets mind:
“I am thinking Warren Buffet just doesn’t have the right source for the blockhain industry news and is being mislead by the media most of the time so that is why we want to have lunch with him.”
“In these 10 years since 2009, (show) how much the progress we have made and also the blockchain industry right now is really big even facebook (and) JPMorgan are starting to look at the opportunity to start their own stablecoin on their blockchain aswell.”
“I think it’s too much for us to change his mind in like just a 3 hours lunch but certainly we will give him a different opinion on bitcoin and the blockchain technology.”
Sun has stated he plans to bring along a handful of other cryptocurrency pioneers including Litecoin Creator Charlie Lee, Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin and Changpeng Zhao, CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Binance. While neither Lee or Buterin have responded (at least publicly) to the invites Zhao has declined, stating his reasons on twitter along with a recommendation to take his space:
@justinsuntron kindly invited me to go, but I can’t make it. Too far. I guess that’s like turning down $1,000,000, assuming 5 guys going, lol… But very much appreciated. I would totally recommend inviting @APompliano.
I guess Buffet will be eating a lunch funded by “rat poison” after all, lol. Further, what if crypto entrepreneurs buy him lunch for the next 10 years? $50m at net present value, a decent sized ICO, lol… Well, careful what you wish for.
While Pompliano has shown interest it’s not yet been made clear if Sun is extending the invite to him or if he will even be able to make the occasion. As for the other 4 seats, they remain open with one at least potentially going to a figurehead in the mining community of crypto.
